General Academic Rules & Regulations Class Attendance Students are expected to be regular and punctual in their attendance for all classes. Class and Examination To enable the institute to meet its obligation in the coverage of the required curriculum actively and to make up for unexpected loss of valuable study time due to unforeseen circumstances, it would be for some schools to conduct classes and even examinations on Saturdays and public holidays. Eligibility to sit Examination Under the present program regulations exercised in all Engineering Schools, it requires that all students must achieve a minimum of 75% in attendance and 50% in course work to be eligible for entry to the Examination Room. In the School of Commerce, the program regulations require all students to attend all tutorial sessions in every unit. Absence from Class If a student is absent from lecture sessions for more than three consecutive weeks without written notification, he/she will be deemed to have withdrawn from the class. Re-enrollment may be subject to payment of a further registration fee and fulfillment of the attendance and course-work requirements. Change of Program Students who wish to change their program must consult with the relevant lecturers and Head of School. This must be done within 1 week for the 8-weeks program and within 2 weeks for 18-weeks program. Safety Attires (i) All students attending programs involving practical sessions in workshops or laboratories must have suitable footwear and overalls. Students presenting themselves with inadequate footwear will be refused entry into the workshops. For some programs, students may be provided with a specific dress code by their heads of school. (ii) Students who are going for Industrial Attachment are required to provide for their safety attires e.g. Overalls, safety boots etc. Illness or Injury Should unavoidable circumstances, such as illness or injury occur during your study period, which may hinder you from attending your class tests or final examinations, you are advised to inform your Head of School as early as possible. Appeal of Re-assessment A student, who believes that his/her assignments, projects, tests or examination marks has been incorrectly graded, may make written submissions to the Head of School for reassessment. Weighing of Marks The course work and examination marks for each unit are given separate weightings to arrive at the aggregate total of 100%. Therefore, as an example, if you already have 70% in your course work, this does not mean that you need to pass 30% only in your exam to get a total of 100% Re-sit Cases Students who have failed examinations in the Schools of Engineering may apply for re-sit. The place and time to re-sit the examination will be determined by the Examination Board. Academic Calendar Please refer to the Academic Calendar for your reference.
