Department of Media Studies
The Media Studies Department offers Media and Journalism through the  Certificate of Media and Journalism and Diploma in Media and Journalism. Both courses run for three Trimesters of 36 weeks and is offered full time during the day for the Certificate in Media in Journalism and in the evening for Diploma in Media in Journalism.

Programs offered and Job Opportunities

The course since its inception in 2003 and in the last three years has been successfully established as one the premier journalism schools of the region. Most of the schools graduates are now working in newsrooms in various media organizations in Fiji both in the mainstream media and alternative media. Students have found employment in television, radio, newspapers and magazine and some have ventured to alternative church and corporate media. FIT Media Studies train students in both traditional and electronic media to prepare for the work and challenges of the modern informational era that media personnel and journalist faces in today’s’ society.

What do you learn?

The program develops student knowledge and skills of media and the analytical processes and techniques to provide for the insatiable demand for in depth news that exist in todays’media industry. The Certificate of Media and Journalism is designed as part of the Diploma in Media in Journalism and trains students in specific units in IT skills, core journalism units like news writing, broadcast journalism in radio and television and also teaches proper journalism research skills. In addition media students learn the proper conduction of the art of interviews and study society through Civics lessons to learn about Fiji, the Pacific region and the world. The lessons prepare students to work in regional and international countries and to understand and write local, regional and international news. Fiji media because of its recurrent political turmoil is set in a sophisticated media environment with the different challenges of society and our students are trained to cope with the challenging explosive news environment. The Diploma in Media and Journalism learn to report in depth with an understanding of the Environment, Legal, with Principles of Law and Media. An understanding of beat reporting in Police Court and Parliament, Sports and Health issues and Regional and Global Developments Issues and a study of  Pacific Island Cultures . Diplomats also equip themselves learning the latest software in Web Design and Management. Students learn Business Economics, and Marketing and Program Production and also trained as mentors and media trainers, in Mentoring, Team Building and Communication. Diploma in Media and Journalism students study regional and global developments to give them a deeper understanding and be able to report on regional and global issues.

Quickly find out answers to your assignments and research on information to news stories for news bulletin whether on radio or television or newspapers and on the web.

The computers features the latest software for media production that can edit news bulletins, radio documentary, audio visual production like television, dramas, documentaries and commercials and corporate videos. Computer program and also teaches student to create and manage the latest and fastest communication medium in web media,

89.6 FIT FM Radio News, Newspaper and Television Production

Students of media and journalism follow newsroom deadlines as they produce a weekly news bulletin for FIT 89.6 FM. The news bulletin team consists of students with their own news directors, news team, editors and equipments to produce real time news bulletin for the 89.6 FIT FM radio station.

WEB News

Students produce for the FIT WEB news weekly on events and stories happening around FIT. Students are follow tips and research and write stories for giving them practical face to face interaction with newsmakers while still in school. Web news stories for the Media and Journalism Web news site can be found on FIT main Website.

Students Newspaper

FIT media students research, write and publish a quarterly newspaper called “the FIT Journalist” The team of Editors, Sub editors Writers and Lay out artist follow the standards and work like their counterpart in the media industry The Journalist”. The opportunity is a unique learning experience as students manage and produce and publish their own newspapers with advertisements sought from companies around Fiji.

TV Production

Students research and write news stories for TV news. Student then and shoot short news stories to prepare them for TV news. Students are given positions like in real time newsrooms to research, write and produce their stories.

The computer lab also enable media and journalism students to produce brochures and pamphlets for small media project to train them in communication and prepare themselves to work in advocacy and non government organizations

Lecturers with post Graduate qualification and experience from the media industry.

Most of our Lectures are qualified in the Media with Post graduate degrees and have spent over a decade of media experience and the hard acquired knowledge of the media craft is shared with students in the class rooms. In addition students enjoy conferences and lectures on issues of public interest. Of course students enjoy field trips to visit and meet news makers and news sources at the same time interacting with the different cultures of Fiji and the Pacific as they build on their career in the media.
